10 Tips to get past Writer's Block

  1. Write...Write...Write. The best way to unclog the block is to work through it. If there is nothing you feel worthy of writing then just write, "then there was nothing there." Whatever the impulse just write it or about it. Even if it does not make any sense just write. Soon you will find that your creative juices are free flowing again.
  2. Relax. Take the time to relax your mind and let go of the idea of being a brilliant writer making millions from your work. Once you let go and just write because you have a passion for writing then you will truly be successful.
  3. Be the individual creative writer you were created to be. Everyone likes to read what others write but when you start to compare your work to the work of others believe it or not you will always come up short. We are our own worst enemy. Right? So accept your gift, as is, and write what you like to write about.
  4. Room for improvement. There is always room for learning new techniques, style and improving the craft of writing so accept where you are now and be willing do what it takes to strive toward perfection. Remember, Rome wasn't built in a day.
  5. Keep a positive attitude. Sometimes hard but not impossible is the reward of keeping a positive attitude. So you may not have anything to write about now but you will tomorrow. Need some help getting positive? Then listen to your favorite song, read your favorite book or do whatever your favorite thing is to do. You will soon swim in the positive pool of thought and the river of ideas will flow once more.
  6. Carry a note pad. Always, Always, Always carry a notepad to jot down notes at the spur of the moment. Now days most smartphones have a notepad app so why not use it. When the idea strikes you write it down then revisit it later when you don't have that award winning idea in the moment. Besides, the best writing ideas happen when you least expect it. Kind of like love.
  7. Relationships inspire writing. Sometimes just being around friends, family, co-workers and relationship drama can ignite that BIG writing idea lurking within. So get out there connect with others and observe what's going on around you.
  8. Experience. Next to relationships you have some experience. Either it be life changing or just life there is something you know or have experienced that someone else has not. So, why not write about it?
  9. Exercise. Believe it or not exercise helps. When you exercise you bring more oxygen to your brain allowing you to gain focus. Exercise also helps us to relax, destress and stimulates those positive feelings as mentioned before. But don't forget that notepad to write down that million dollar idea.
  10. Stop worrying. If you are worrying about what others think or how they may judge your writing then re-read 1-9 again. If you are passionate about writing then it is about you expressing yourself through words and the craft that matter. Just like painting on a blank canvas it is your artistic creation and yours alone. Others may take the opportunity to enjoy it or not but that is their choice.

Writer's Encouragement

A final note of encouragement for writers is that every writer both great and small had to start somewhere. There were times in many a great writer's life that they were rejected. However, through perseverance they did not give up but pressed on to become those classics, journalist, bloggers, web pages etc... that you have either heard about or have read the content. So be encouraged that writer's block does not last forever but only as long as you allow it too.

Good advice. And when you aren't writing: read, read, read, don't get stuck with the mind-stultifying telly. Also, you can't beat good resources for ideas. Not the internet: charity shops, flea markets (boot sales in the YUK). Buy heaps of cheap texts on interesting subjects and use facets found within to branch out into some ancillary subject. You have to like - even love - to write. Then is can become second nature and no longer drudgery. Hub voted up and useful...Bob

You are right! READ. READ. READ. As well as, learn one new word a day or at least one a week. In other words "expand your vocabulary."
